Directly in front of Lyon's Palais de Justice is a foot bridge across the Saône.

Saint Jean Cathedral, Lyon, France

At the foot of the hill below Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière is Saint Jean Cathedral. This was the main church in Lyon until Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière was built.

Fourvière - Saint-Jean Funiculaire, Lyon, France

The easiest way to get up the hill to the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière is to ride the Fourvière - Saint-Jean Funiculaire. On the way down, wait until you can stand in the front of the car and you'll have this view.

Roman Theatre, Lyon, France

Just down the hill from Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a Roman theatre. Roman theatres are semicircular structures. Amphitheatres are circular.

On the south side of Fourvière are the (partially intact) ruins of a Roman Theatre (15 BC), only rediscovered in the 20th century, and now home to a museum and a series of concerts and operas throughout the summer, and the ruins of vast Roman Baths.

Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière, Lyon, France

The mother of my exchange students took me to Lyon for the afternoon. Our first stop was the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière. It's not obvious in the aerial shot but there's a huge bluff to the East. Be sure and browse around some in the Bird's eye views. Unbelieveably, it's even more beautiful in person. The subway station is just to the West across the zebra stripes.
